Having then a great high priest, who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let’s hold tightly to our confession. For we don’t have a high priest who can’t be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has in all points been tempted like we are, yet without sin. Let’s therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace for help in time of need.
Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, welcome to "The Bible Club"! Today's passage from Hebrews offers us an incredibly comforting and empowering truth about our access to God through Jesus, our Great High Priest. Let's anchor our hearts in this divine promise.
Our Great High Priest: Jesus, the Son of God
"Having then a great high priest, who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let’s hold tightly to our confession." What an astounding declaration! The book of Hebrews consistently elevates Jesus above all others – angels, Moses, earthly priests. Here, He is presented as our "great high priest," not just great in comparison, but truly great in His very being and position. He is not merely a human priest from the line of Aaron, but "Jesus, the Son of God." This means His priesthood is eternal, perfect, and supremely effective. He has "passed through the heavens," signifying His ascension to the very presence of God, where He continually intercedes for us.
This truth isn't just for theological debate; it's profoundly practical. Because Jesus is our High Priest, we are urged to "hold tightly to our confession." What is this confession? It's our affirmation of faith in Jesus as Savior and Lord, the Son of God, the One who died for our sins and rose again. When life’s trials come, when doubts creep in, or when the world pressures us to abandon our faith, this truth about Jesus' supreme priesthood gives us an unbreakable reason to cling to Him. He is our constant, unchanging mediator.
An Empathetic and Sinless Savior
"For we don’t have a high priest who can’t be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has in all points been tempted like we are, yet without sin." This verse unveils the heart of our High Priest. Unlike the Old Testament high priests who, though human, could not fully comprehend the depth of human struggle as Jesus did, our Lord understands perfectly. He was not aloof or detached from human experience. He lived among us, experienced hunger, weariness, grief, rejection, temptation – "in all points been tempted like we are." He knows our "infirmities" – our weaknesses, our sufferings, our moments of fear and doubt.
Yet, critically, He was "without sin." This makes all the difference. His perfect, sinless life means He fully qualifies to be our spotless sacrifice and our pure intercessor. His empathy isn't born of shared sinfulness, but of shared humanity under the burden of temptation, overcome by His perfect obedience to the Father. He can sympathize with our struggles because He felt their full weight, yet He triumphed where we often falter. This profound empathy is the bedrock of our confidence in approaching Him.
Bold Access to the Throne of Grace
"Let’s therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace for help in time of need." This is the glorious invitation flowing from the truths above. Because we have such a Great High Priest – empathetic, sinless, divine, and fully human – we are not to approach God with timid fear, but with boldness. The "throne of grace" is no longer a fearful place of judgment, but a place where God's loving-kindness reigns supreme. Through Jesus, the chasm of sin separating us from a holy God has been bridged.
This boldness is not presumption; it's a Spirit-empowered confidence in what Jesus has done for us. When we come, we are promised two magnificent things: "mercy and grace." Mercy is God withholding the punishment we deserve, pardoning our sins. Grace is God giving us what we don't deserve – His favor, strength, guidance, and power to live for Him. And this is not just for grand, life-altering moments, but "for help in time of need" – for every single struggle, every small temptation, every moment of weakness, every crisis. We have an open invitation to God's inexhaustible supply of help. What an incredible privilege! Let us take hold of it today and every day.
May the truth of Jesus, our sympathetic High Priest, embolden your heart to draw near to God's throne of grace, finding all the mercy and grace you need.
