Built Together — A Daily Bible Study on Ephesians 2:19-20

Welcome, beloved friends, to The Bible Club! Today, we open God’s Word to a profoundly comforting and identity-shaping passage from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. This book is a rich tapestry of truth about who we are in Christ and what God has accomplished for us. Let’s dive into Ephesians 2:19-20:

"So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God, being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone;"

What a magnificent declaration! Paul is speaking to former Gentiles, who were once 'far off' from God's covenant promises, without hope and without God in the world (Ephesians 2:12). But through Christ, everything has changed. This passage beautifully articulates their (and our) new status.

No Longer Strangers, But Family

Imagine moving to a new country where you don't speak the language, understand the customs, or have any legal rights. You'd feel like a stranger, an outsider. This was the spiritual reality for many of the Ephesians before Christ. They were 'strangers' to God's covenants and 'foreigners' to His people. But Jesus, through His death on the cross, broke down the dividing wall (Ephesians 2:14). Now, Paul declares, "you are no longer strangers and foreigners." This isn't just a polite invitation; it's a profound transformation of status. We are now "fellow citizens with the saints." This means we share in all the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of God's people. We belong! We have a place, a purpose, and an inheritance in the kingdom of God.

But it gets even more intimate. We are also "of the household of God." This isn't just about citizenship; it's about family. We are adopted sons and daughters, welcomed into the most loving and secure home imaginable. Think of the warmth, acceptance, and protection that a good household provides. That's our reality in Christ. This truth should fill our hearts with immense gratitude and security. We are not alone, we are not forgotten, and we are not outsiders. We are family, deeply loved and fully accepted by our Heavenly Father.

Built on an Unshakeable Foundation

Paul shifts the metaphor from a family to a building, specifically a holy temple where God dwells (Ephesians 2:21-22). He says we are "being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone." This imagery is incredibly powerful. Every sturdy building needs a strong, reliable foundation. For us, that foundation is the teaching of the apostles and prophets. This refers to the inspired revelation of God's truth, primarily recorded in Scripture, which points to and explains the work of Christ. It's the consistent, unchanging message of God's redemptive plan throughout history.

And at the very heart of this foundation, holding everything together and setting the alignment for the entire structure, is "Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone." In ancient architecture, the cornerstone was the most important stone. It was laid first, perfectly squared, and every other stone was measured and aligned according to it. Without a true cornerstone, the entire building would be crooked and unstable. Jesus is our cornerstone. He is the standard, the truth, the life, and the way. Our faith, our lives, our church – everything must be aligned with Him. He is the one who gives meaning, stability, and purpose to every part of the building.

As we are 'being built,' it implies an ongoing process. God is continually shaping us, individually and corporately, into His likeness. He uses the truth revealed through the apostles and prophets, centered on Christ, to transform us. This building isn't just a physical structure; it's a living, spiritual edifice, a dwelling place for God's Spirit. What a privilege to be part of such a magnificent, divine project! May we continually draw close to our Cornerstone, allowing His truth to shape and align every aspect of our lives.
