A New Life in Christ — A Daily Bible Study on Romans 6:4

### Buried with Christ, Raised to New Life

Take a moment to truly ponder what Paul is saying here: "Therefore we were buried with him through baptism into death..." This isn't just about water; it's about a profound spiritual reality. When we come to faith in Jesus, something radical happens. Our old self, the self dominated by sin and rebellion against God, is symbolically, yet truly, put to death. It's buried with Christ. Think of a burial – it signifies an end. The old life, with its chains of sin and its focus on self, is finished. It's dead and buried.

But the story doesn't end there, does it? Paul continues, "...that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life." This is the glorious truth of the gospel! Our burial with Christ is not a desolate end, but a precursor to a magnificent beginning. Just as the Father's power, His incredible glory, raised Jesus from the dead, that same divine power is at work in us, raising us to a "newness of life."

What does this "newness of life" look like? It's a life no longer enslaved to sin. Before Christ, sin reigned in our mortal bodies (Romans 6:12). We were compelled to obey its desires. But now, because we have been united with Christ in His death and resurrection, sin no longer has the same dominion over us. We have been set free! This freedom isn't a license to sin, but an empowerment to live differently, to walk in obedience to God, to bear the fruit of the Spirit.

### Living Out Your New Identity

This new life isn't just a future promise; it's a present reality. We are called to walk in this newness. The word "walk" implies an ongoing journey, a daily decision to live in accordance with our new identity. It means recognizing that the old self, which loved sin and lived apart from God, is no longer who you are. Your true identity, given to you by God through Christ, is one of righteousness, holiness, and fellowship with Him.

For the new believer, this understanding is foundational. It assures you that you are truly a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17), not just a slightly improved version of your old self. For the mature believer, it's a constant reminder of the incredible grace that has transformed us and the power available to us to resist temptation and pursue godliness. When you face temptation, remember Romans 6:4. The old you, who would have easily succumbed, is buried. The new you, empowered by the resurrected Christ, has the ability to choose righteousness.

This resurrection life is made possible "through the glory of the Father." It's not by our own strength, but by His. This should fill us with both humility and confidence. Humility, because we know it's all Him. Confidence, because His power is limitless. As you go about your day, remember that you are walking in the resurrection power of Jesus. Live like it, beloved brothers and sisters. Live in the glorious newness of life that Christ has given you.
