The Bread of Life — A Daily Bible Study on John 6:35
John 6:35 (WEB)
Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will not be hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty."
Welcome, dear friends, to The Bible Club! Today, we embrace a profound declaration from our Savior in John 6:35. Imagine a world where hunger and thirst are banished forever. Not just physical hunger, but the gnawing ache in our souls for purpose, meaning, and true contentment. Jesus addresses this very ache, proclaiming, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will not be hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty."
The Deepest Hunger and Thirst
To fully appreciate Jesus' words, we must understand the context. The people He was speaking to had just witnessed Him miraculously feed over five thousand people with five barley loaves and two fish (John 6:1-14). They were physically satisfied, but Jesus knew their greatest need wasn't for more physical bread. He saw beyond their stomachs to their souls. Humans are wired for something eternal, something transcendent. We try to fill that void with careers, relationships, possessions, or achievements, but these are like temporary snacks; they never truly satisfy the deep spiritual hunger and thirst God placed within us. Only God Himself can fill that space.
Jesus uses the imagery of "bread of life" to communicate a vital truth. In ancient Israel, bread was a staple, essential for survival. It sustained physical life. Jesus, by calling Himself the "bread of life," declares that He is absolutely essential for our spiritual life. He is not a way to satisfy; He is the way. He is the very source of spiritual sustenance that gives and sustains eternal life. Just as our bodies need food daily to function, our souls need Jesus to thrive and live eternally.
Coming to Jesus and Believing in Him
Jesus' statement isn't merely a theological assertion; it's an invitation. "He who comes to me will not be hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty." What does it mean to "come to" Jesus and "believe in" Him? It's more than just intellectual assent to facts about Him. To come to Jesus means to intentionally turn to Him, to seek Him out, to draw near to Him in submission and dependence. It's a conscious act of relinquishing our own efforts to satisfy ourselves and instead, looking solely to Him.
And to believe in Him means to place our complete trust and faith in who He says He is – the Son of God, our Savior, the one who died for our sins and rose again. It means entrusting our very lives, our past, present, and future, into His loving hands. When we "come" and "believe," we aren't just signing up for a new religion; we are entering into a life-giving relationship with the Creator of the universe. This relationship provides the spiritual nourishment that satisfies every longing of our hearts.
Everlasting Satisfaction
Notice the profound promise: "will not be hungry" and "will never be thirsty." This isn't a temporary fix, but an everlasting satisfaction. The world offers fleeting pleasures that leave us wanting more, always searching for the next thing. But Jesus offers something different – a lasting contentment, a peace that transcends circumstances, a joy that is rooted in His unchangeable love. This doesn't mean we won't face challenges or discomfort in life, but our deepest spiritual needs, our fundamental hunger for God, are met in Him completely and eternally.
As we journey through life, let us continually remember this truth. When we feel empty, when our souls ache for something more, let us turn to Jesus, the Bread of Life. Let us actively come to Him, believe in Him, and partake of the spiritual nourishment He freely offers. He is waiting to satisfy every spiritual hunger and quench every spiritual thirst that we may ever know. He is all we need, today and for all eternity.
